So what to do with this small wall? We got a quart of magnet paint, one of chalkboard paint, and two very bright latex paints.
Oh and the drywall, tape, and mud.
First tip: If you need to put in new drywall remember when you sand it creates a huge mess dust wise.
Second tip: This is not a winter project unless you live somewhere really warm and can leave the doors and windows open. This stuff stinks! It smells like lighter fluid. As it is still winter and we live in North Idaho we have only got one coat of the magnet paint on the wall and until it warms up a bit we will live with a black wall.
Well even with only one coat we had to try it out. The little letters and numbers will stick but not very well. We shall see if it was all worth it after a few more coats.
Tip three: This is a base coat and you can (and will want to) paint over it with regular paint.
Ok so it has warmed up and I have three coats of magnet paint on the wall. I then marked off section with blue paint tape and got out the rollers and paint.
We chose a lime green and a hot pink. The black magnet paint is hard to cover. I put three coats on and the green seemed to cover it better than the pink. I should have got a quart of white and started with that. Over all not bad. As for the sticking power of the magnet paint. Thin magnets, like the one they give out with advertizing on work the best even through three layers of paint. So if you want to use this a message board or for even the plastic letter and number magnets you would be better off mounting a sheet of metal instead. Over all I think this will work for what we want.
Now as to the chalkboard we still need to wait a few days to try it out. I did sand it several times to get a smoother surface but it is nothing like a school blackboard.
